EVENING ESCARPMENT

The Roaches are a series of gritstone crags, which together create a distinct escarpment marking the south western edge of the Peak District National Park.

Over millions of years the crags have been worn into fantastic shapes by the elements, creating a landscape photographers dream.

Evening is the best time to photograph them, when the sinking sun turns the escarpment a deep golden colour and the weathered shapes take on an enchantment of their own.

The "Upper Tier" is shown here, along with the distant peak of Hen Cloud.
